is a very popular area for water sports. To begin there is boating and fishing for popular game fish like crappie, bluegill and yellow perch, striped, largemouth and white bass. You can rent a motorized boat, a pedal boat or canoe at Lake Norman. For those who’d rather just sit back and enjoy the scenery surrounding the lake, there’ s even an old time Mississippi Paddle Wheeler available at Lake Norman. Use of the boat launch area is free. Other recreational activities at the lake include swimming, jet skiing, water skiing, windsurfing, biking, hiking, picnicking and golf. There are several lakeside hiking trails around Lake Norman that range from an easy .8 mile loop, to a more lengthy but moderate 6.5 mile trail. Two very nice picnic areas can be found at Lake Norman with tables, grills, drinking water and restrooms nearby. Golfing in the Lake Norman communities has become one of the finest experiences in golf in the Carolinas. Courses range from daily fee to private clubs, from brand new facilities to championship decades old classics. How about a sunset champagne balloon flight over Lake Norman? It’s available, and is an exciting, romantic way to view the lake and surrounding countryside. Don’t despair, however, if the weather turns stormy because there are plenty of other things to do in besides lakeside sports. To start, you can explore the nearby small towns and look for bargains or unusual items in specialty stores and outlet malls or dine in one of the areas many fine restaurants. You can tour Duke Power’s Energy Explorium, which is a free, hands-on way to learn about electricity and how the Lake Norman environment is protected. The Latta Plantation Park is a short drive on nearby Mountain Island Lake and the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville has over 400 animals, including camels and reindeer.
The city of Charlotte is just 18 miles away and offers a plethora interesting attractions for visitors. To begin, take a guided walking tour of Historical Uptown Charlotte and learn all about the city’s people, places and events of the past. Visitors can choose either a morning tour of Charlotte’s uptown or an afternoon tour of the nearby Victorian neighborhood. This tour is a must see for history buffs. The Levine Museum of the New South is an interactive museum in Charlotte that houses the country’s most thorough interpretation of post-Civil War Southern history. Some of the exhibits include “Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers” and “Courage: The Carolina Story that Changed America,” which honors the 50th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. Board of Education. Another interesting place to spend an afternoon in the city is the Carolina Raptor Center, which focuses on the environmental education and conservation of birds of prey through public education and research and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned birds. The center has fun games and activities for kids of all ages. Charlotte’s City Center is host to several exhibits, including the Afro-American Cultural Center.
