Lake Norman NC is an ideal place to live or play. The communities around the lake have seen an economic and population boom in recent years, but have managed to retain their small town atmosphere. Lake Norman began primarily as a weekend retreat area, and has now become one of the most rapidly growing suburbs of Charlotte. Interstate 77 was recently widened to help with the increasing traffic to and from the lake, and there is also a proposal to create a rapid transit bus system to link the small towns surrounding Lake Norman to Charlotte. There are excellent public and private schools in the area, and the University of North Carolina is just a short drive away. The Lake Norman Medical Center has a new, state-of-the-art facility located in the town of Mooresville. All of this combines to make Lake Norman very attractive for retirees and those who are looking to relocate permanently or to purchase a second home. There are several exclusive planned communities around the lake with all the amenities you can imagine, such as golf course, pools, tennis courts and more. A new trend has also begun around Lake Norman of housing communities with their own shops, restaurants and business services, linked together by sidewalks and an open green area. Downtown Charlotte is an easy twenty minute drive from the lake, so many choose to live here and commute to jobs in the city. The following is a brief description of the four main towns surrounding Lake Norman.

Huntersville is considered the fastest growing Lake Norman community. With annual events such as "Hello Huntersville, a Christmas and Spring Festival” brings together the townspeople with a sense of pride in their community. Huntersville was established in 1885 and has several historic sites open to the public. It began as a town to service the families of the large cotton plantation owners, but in later years, textile mills brought more jobs and residents to the town.

Davidson is a small, friendly town with a “home town” character with lakefront recreation and big city amenities. Davidson was founded in 1891 and the Davidson College is the town’s main employer and has a strong influence on the community. The college is recognized as one of the leading four-year liberal arts institutions in the country.

The town of Cornelius offers a delightful blend of old and new. It was also once a textile town, but is now a resort town with a large variety of quality motels and restaurants that have a reputation for southern hospitality. Cornelius has a renovated downtown area with quaint shops and new shopping centers.

Mooresville has primarily been an agricultural community since 1873. The town was named for John Franklin Moore who was successful in bringing the Atlantic, Tennessee and Ohio Railroad to town by building a depot and sidetrack to hold large cotton shipments that were hauled away on the railroad. Today, Mooresville’s business sector is very diversified, yet still relies on textiles as the cornerstone of its economy.
